What's Herpes Gotta Do With It?

I am extremely unclear on the connection between herpes and Tarlov Cyst Disease. I personally do not have herpes, but I read on the forums that some of my fellow sufferes do. I am not sure where the theory originated from that one causes the other. Obviously that is not 100% true because I have Tarlov Cyst Disease and no herpes. So, maybe the onset of a herpes outbreak influenced the cyst to become symptomatic, but only because it took the body's attention away. I am not a doctor, clearly, but am trying to get to the bottom of everything we are being told. If I just lapped up all the stuff that the western medical world tried to force feed us, I would still be in bed crying waiting for the 'miracle' of surgery to find its way to me.

Perhaps the connection came from the fact that tarlovian's symptoms began to improve with the addition of a L-Lysine supplement. The primary studies done on this supplement (amino acid) indicate a significant reduction in outbreaks and duration of outbreaks of herpes while taking substansial doses of L-Lysine. The medical world relies on published studies only, so maybe that is how the two became associated, though not seeminlgy tethered in fact. I for one beleive that the L-Lysine helps due to the fact that it is an amino acid that is imperative for strengthening the immune system and is essential for maintenance of nitrogen balance. The more in blance we can bring our bodies, the better we are arming ourselves with the tools needed to fight abnormal cells.

For this reason, and because there was a reported incident of a lady adding in L-Lysine and her cyst disappeared after several months, I have added in L-Lysine to my daily regimen. Fingers crosses mine disappears into oblivion, never to be heard from again!

  1. There was/is a general Tarlov cyst survey for which patients had the opportunity to propose questions, and my question on herpes pretty much ruled out any widespread correlation. That does not mean that there is no connection for any TCer though. Dr. Long said he wouldn't rule it out and it can't hurt to try. I suspect TCs can get infected by a virus or bacterium and made worse--but there is no real evidence. Roger
